Commuting notes for ORD

  • A United ORD new hire commuting from Florida was told flying back and forth on probation is risky, because mechanics have been fired while on probation. Most get an Airbnb or rent a room. A crashpad is usually cheaper than a hotel. A few sleep in a van in the employee parking lot (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • A SkyWest ORD hire commuting from MSP was told plenty of people make that commute (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • ORD is a high-cost, hard-to-fill station where commuting mechanics tend to concentrate Inference.
  • Station locks, probation, dispatcher jumpseat, and per diem basics: general commuting tips.
